First book of a quartet.
Back in the 1970s, the author and a friend imagined and produced a silent movie about a train robbery and its aftermath that takes place over two days in the 1870s.
The movie is the basis for this work of historical fiction. The story moves you from the age of sail, through the Civil War and into the age of steam. It culminates with the characters -- some embroiled in an epic historical disaster of their own -- trying to piece together and come to grips with what transpired during those fateful two days.
Second book of the quartet.
A sequel to the author's earlier work, All For None, this book continues the story of the Morgans of New Bedford through the exploits of their bright, high-spirited daughter. A surprise late arrival, she took the family by storm with her progressive thinking and boundless energy.
This riveting tale transports you from the romance and innocence of the Gilded Age, plunking you down hard on the doorstep of the emerging modern world. You will accompany a rebellious young woman as she rejects conformity and comes of age amid the carnage of the Great War. Then continue with her down the bumpy road of the early 20th Century.
Third book of the quartet.
The family saga continues: After being lost at sea for months following a yachting disaster, bright, headstrong identical twin girls test their parents' mettle and that of those around them in 1930s Africa. Things take another perilous turn when they decide on Europe to further their education. One chooses Paris, the other Munich. It's September 1938. Marooned a year later as war breaks out, both are there for the duration. As they fight to survive, it becomes obvious their thinking is anything but identical.
Fourth book of the quartet.
Leaving war-torn years behind, our story following the Morgan family dynasty continues into the second half of the 20th century. Most Americans, so jubilant in their new-found freedom from years of want and war, are oblivious to the sinister ramifications of a growing Cold War threat.
As a struggle for control in Eastern Europe intensifies between East and West, the FBI begins secretly recruiting former German adversaries in an effort to thwart the steam-rolling ambitions of the Soviet Union. Unbeknownst to family members, one of their own, count Wolfgang von Hoffman (a former Wehrmacht officer) has been coerced into the clandestine program. Now essentially living two lives, he finds himself preforming a dangerous dance of deception while struggling to survive.
The autobiography below is intended only family and close friends. Way too many bad ideas and dirty laundry for the general public. Exceptions, the preface and last entry.
